🌻 Butler County Midweek Roundup — Wednesday, August 12

Halfway through the week, Butler County, here's what's happening around us.

⛈️ Cleanup continues after Tuesday's storms. Severe thunderstorms rolled through the county Tuesday, bringing wind gusts topping 50 mph at the Butler County Regional Airport and knocking out power to more than 2,000 customers across AES Ohio, Duke Energy, Ohio Edison, and city of Hamilton service areas. Trees and power lines came down in multiple spots, including a hard hit in Shandon, where a large uprooted tree fell on a historical marker near the Morgan Township Fire Department's station. Neighbors pitched in with backhoes and chainsaws to help clear roads. A flood watch remains in effect through Wednesday evening, and the county's damage assessment was expected to continue today. 🚦 Speed limit dropping on Cincinnati Dayton Road. The Butler County Engineer's Office is lowering the speed limit from 40 to 35 mph on Cincinnati Dayton Road between Liberty Way and Princeton Road in Liberty Township. New signs are going up now. A recent traffic study backed the change, citing heavy use of the corridor by pedestrians, cyclists, and micromobility riders headed to nearby schools, restaurants, and businesses.

🚔 OVI checkpoint coming this week. The Hamilton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol will run a checkpoint somewhere in Butler County in the coming days as part of an ongoing effort to keep impaired drivers off the road. Location won't be announced until the morning of, so plan ahead and have a sober ride lined up if you'll be out.

🏨 Liberty Center growing again. A planned hotel and hundreds of new apartments at Liberty Center are moving forward after developers announced another $20 million investment in the project.

🏫 New school year, new setup for Hamilton City Schools. Hamilton City Schools opens the school year with a significant restructuring, consolidating campuses, reassigning students, and shifting some services to BCESC partnerships. Worth a look if you've got kids in the district.

🌠 Look up tonight. The Perseids, the year's most popular meteor shower, peak tonight into early Thursday. Clear skies willing, it's a good excuse for a late-night porch sit.
