Are you looking for an interesting day trip that is close to Butler County?
Look no further than one of the best-kept secrets in the Cincinnati-Dayton area.
Just north of Kings Island on Interstate 71 are the remains of Fort Ancient Earthworks. Fort Ancient Earthworks is the largest hilltop enclosure earthworks in North America. It’s believed humans lived here 2000 years ago. The grounds are a National Historic Landmark and Ohio’s first state park. Fort Ancient is one step closer to being listed on the World’s Heritage Sites too. It’s a remarkable place to visit!
The visit includes a tour of the interpretive center, mind you there is a nominal admission fee. Visitors catch a glimpse of what life could have been like for the people who lived here thousands of years ago. The center has artifacts including tools, pottery, and other displays that show how the different cultures may have lived in the hilltop enclosure. The trip would not be complete without taking a drive and hiking out to the majestic scenery of the woodlands below the hilltop. There are sitting areas, picnic tables, shelters, and trails to enjoy and imagine what life could have been for the inhabitants of the Ancient Hilltop enclosure. It’s located at 6123 State Route 350, Oregonia, Ohio. Visit https://www.ohiohistory.org/visit/browse-historical-sites/fort-ancient-earthworks-nature-preserve/
