Miami University Mourns Police Captain

49-year-old retired Police Captain Benjamin Spilman made a lasting influence on Miami University. Spilman started his 26-year-long career as a student employee before deciding to become a police officer for Miami University Police Department. Spilman, who worked his way from emergency dispatcher to police captain during his law enforcement career, was a vital part of the community, contributing to local criminal justice research and serving as a Boy Scouts volunteer for nearly nine years.

Miami University Police Department shared these images to a memorial Facebook post honoring Spilman.

Spilman provided crucial research for various police agencies, earning the 2019 service-learning impact award at Miami University after studying crime hot spot policing in Middletown.  Spilman passed away on April 10 after a two-year battle with cancer, his family is asking for donations to the Fort Hamilton Hospital Foundation to honor Captain Spilman’s lasting legacy at Miami University.

Spilman worked his way through the ranks, earning Police Captain in July 2015.
