As a high caseload county in the peaks of the Covid pandemic, many Butler County residents lost their jobs and livelihoods in 2020 and 2021. Some residents took this as their time to explore entrepreneurship.

Amelia Glenchur, owner of Mia’s Muttz, found that the pandemic had negative effects on her mental health, creating her business has helped her cope with the shockwaves following Covid restrictions. “I started Mia’s Muttz during the pandemic because I needed another income to make ends meet and to pay off some medical bills and debt. I worked in a few dog kennels during the pandemic, loved it and realized how much it did for my mental health. I have my own dog, an 11 yr old shih tzu who is a therapy dog who tags along on all my bookings and keeps me company.” Amelia has gained popularity among pet parents in Butler County, often doing check-ins on pets while their families are away at work or on vacation. For more information about Mia’s Muttz email miasmuttz@outlook.com or visit their facebook page.

Shayla Borst is another local business owner, taking her creativity to Etsy to supplement income while she attends college. “’I’ve always been a crafty person so through the beginning of the pandemic I found myself creating art to cope, and people would ask to buy it and eventually someone said I should create an Etsy account to market myself.” Shayla’s products can be found at etsy.com/shop/ShaylaShoppeCo. Other Butler County residents also focus on artistic based businesses such as owner of Vintage Soul, Candice Winstead, who screen presses vinyl t-shirts and hoodies. Candice says her products are sold primarily through contact via the Vintage Soul Facebook page. “I’m a 28 year old mother to two boys. I started after I had knee surgery and was off from the post office to pass time and to make extra income. I was really hesitant about doing it during Covid because I was worried people were having money issues like myself.”
