A Partnership Worth Watching: Empowered Community & Mustang Journey
Each month, participants from Empowered Community Services of Fairfield Township visit Mustang Journey for a hands-on experience that goes far beyond a simple outing.
Empowered serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through community-based programs that promote independence, engagement, and personal growth, and their time at the barn brings that mission to life in a powerful way.
At Mustang Journey, participants step into a new environment where learning happens naturally. Grooming a horse, moving calmly around a large animal, and following a routine from arrival to departure all help build confidence, patience, and focus. These are meaningful life skills developed in a setting that feels authentic, not clinical.
The connection with the horses is often the most impactful piece. Mustangs respond to energy and consistency rather than words, creating a judgment-free space where participants can build trust, communication skills, and self-assurance. For many, it’s a unique opportunity to connect in a way that feels safe and empowering. These visits also provide true community integration—one of Empowered’s core values. Participants engage not only with the horses, but also with Mustang Journey’s veterans and volunteers, expanding their social circle and sense of belonging.
