5 Points Community Garden- Building a Stronger Community
June 22, 2022 at 10:12 a.m.
Maria Tangi, a Fairfield Township resident, began 5 Points Community Garden, a long process that started in September of 2021 after a feeling of wanting to help others using a love of gardening and inspiring others. Maria's goal is to help others have a place to experience the goals of gardening.
When asked why the garden was started, Maria said "The garden felt more like it was what I am supposed to do. Following that thought and feeling, I found all the paths to get here were in flow with some ease. As for the idea itself, that was sparked from a growing love of the whole process of gardening which came after spending time volunteering through all the seasons, on my friend's market garden and mini farm. I started to learn and become more enamored with the whole process; the physicality, the science, the spiritual connectivity, and the life long learning are some of the many joys I've found in gardening."
Maria continued, saying, "My heart and soul felt full and I thought how cool would I be if more people could feel this feeling. I don't know how long it officially took to start the garden but I started taking actions toward it in September 2021 by going to township meetings. Fairfield Township was a tremendous help throughout the whole process, it would not have been possible so quickly without their help and encouragement. Once I knew it was possible, I began working with someone to help build up the technical stuff such as the website, and linktree. As we are growing, more and more neighbors are beginning to participate. There are definitely a few regulars. So far for this year we are just growing and sharing. The system may change as we have more involvement. All volunteers currently get credits to get first pick for harvests. To learn more visit our Facebook, Instagram or TikTok @5pointscg on all social accounts, or follow our Google calendar to see when we are scheduled to be "in the garden". We would love to host learning events about the planet, gardening and other cool stuff. We are planning some fun garden craft projects, so please follow along on our journey!"
5 points Community Garden is looking for volunteers both inside and outside of the garden, ways you can help include through social media support, project planning and educational leadership.
